August Block Count

First, I did not add correctly.  I reported 539 blocks, but the total should have been 509.  Oy.

This month, I made 3 Modern Vintage blocks, 3 farm blocks, 24 Indigo blocks, and 49 Thick and Thin blocks, for a total of 79 new blocks.  That brings my total for August to 588 blocks.

Stash Report Week #35 and 15 Minutes

I finished another round of brown hexagons, bringing my hand stitching days in 2021 to 229 of 240.

My stash also moved in the right direction this week, with another 1/2 yard out for masks for myself.  I’ve made 29 masks so far.  (I’m well aware an N95 is the best, but when I have four kids and one adult who need masks every day, N95s are not an option.  And a tightly woven three ply mask is better than nothing.)

IN this week: 0 yards
OUT this week: 1/2 yard

IN YTD: 57 1/4 yards
OUT this week: 91 yards
YTD Total: 33 3/4 yards OUT

A Little Bit

I found some aqua in my sewing room this week!  I know these are predominantly purple, but it was the blocks I found that I wanted to make.

This doll is like the Assistant’s American Girl doll
I almost always back the birthday cakes from scratch around here.  The kids like random colors, but often don’t want frosting around the edges anymore.  So there you go!  I did press it earlier this week, but it appears someone played with it after the fact!

So far, we have no one in quarantine.  BJ did temporarily move out of the bedroom he shares with his brothers to a different part of the house, where we have a different air handler.  Anything (reasonable) we can do to keep him safe, I’m willing to try.

The last week and all the adjustment it entailed have me currently exhausted.  Even when I have time to sew, I don’t have much energy.

Stash Report Week #34 and 15 Minutes

With masks and a toddler quilt, I moved my numbers in the right direction this week.  That’s a good thing, as the anxiety about school and COVID in our area grows, I’m tempted to do some shopping for fabric.  Each time, though, I realize I don’t need anything and don’t really want any more on my shelves right now.

IN this week: 0 yards
OUT this week: 5 3/4 yards

IN YTD: 57 1/4 yards
OUT YTD: 90 1/2 yards
YTD Total: 32 1/4 yards OUT

On the hand stitching front, I sewed every day this week.   My numbers are 222 of 233 days for 2021.  I am determined to get to a point where I can lay everything out and make concrete plans for what’s left.  I think I have a little more than half of the colorful hexagons assembled, but I have so many browns still to go.

Finished Quilt: Thick and Thin

I do enjoy a finished quilt.

I’m calling this quilt “Thick and Thin.”  PK really wanted to make a quilt for BJ, and while it took me a little extra time, I did finish it.  It’s about 49” square.  I did all straight line quilting with my walking foot.  I goofed up making the quilting in continuous lines, so there are more stops and starts than I would prefer. But what two year old is going to care?

The backing is a piece of fabric we laid under dying projects this summer.  It’s fun, it’s still, it’s something to look at.

Back On Track

I do know my colors after all!  I cut and sewed one lovely farm quilt block.  I actually do have a turquoise hand mixer, so this is pretty accurate.  I’m not worrying about any of the embroidery right now, as I don’t know what I want to do for colors and thread just yet.

I also made an appropriately colored Modern Vintage block (along with a few friends).  I sorted my blocks last week and chose fabrics for the remaining blocks.  Next month, I’ll suddenly have all the blocks for a quilt!

Most of my sewing this week focused on BJ’s quilt.  I did some easy straight line quilting, but it was time consuming, with lots of starts and stops.  I’ll have the binding finished by tonight hopefully.  Oh, yes, and another round of masks (let’s not spend any time considering the horror that it school this year).

Next week, the goal is more farm blocks.

On the sick baby front, we have what I’ll call a working diagnosis.  The pediatric infectious disease doctor was quick to call it PFAPA, an auto inflammatory syndrome.  I agree that he has an auto inflammatory process occurring, but I suspect it may be a different one.  This gets us started, and the treatment may or may not work regardless of which syndrome it is.  We’ll see the doctor again in a few months and reevaluate.  I am looking forward to having a new tool in my arsenal to keep BJ more comfortable next flare.

It’s blue-green month for the Rainbow Scrap Challenge!

Stash Report Week #33

I polished off three spools of thread this week, to make the total 16 used for the year.

I also finished four masks (for a total of 16 so far this year) and a small quilt, so the stash numbers are continuing to move in the right direction.  Next week should include more masks and another small quilt, so for yet another week I’ll have stash movement!

IN this week: 0 yards
OUT this week: 5 1/2 yards

IN YTD: 57 1/4 (16 purchased)
OUT YTD: 84 3/4 yards
YTD Total: 27 3/4 yards OUT

This week was also successful on the hand piecing front, with another round of brown hexagons added to my teal flowers, for 215 out of 226 days for 2021.

Rainbow Scrap Challenge: Still Off the Rails

I promise I am working my way back to the appropriate Rainbow Scrap Challenge color.  It is, after all, my favorite color.  I’m still working my way through the quilts I cut during BJ’s illness.  (By the way, we have an appointment with the pediatric infectious disease doctor Thursday.  Prayers and positive vibes are requested and appreciated.)

Last night, since BJ fell asleep easy and early last night, I finished the binding on the “Indigo” quilt.  That’s the name of the pattern in the Successful Scrap Quilts from Simple Rectangles.  I left off the borders, so this finished at a pleasant 48” x 72”. It used up a large scrap of wide backing fabric as well as, for the binding, most of an odd batik that came in a mystery bag (Eye of Horus, anyone?).

I’m calling this other quilt Thick and Thin.  I was inspired by Mary at MaryQuilts.  PK really, really, really wanted to make a quilt for BJ, so persistently that here I am making a quilt for him.  I think it will be good for rides in the car when it gets cold.  BJ’s color is orange and PK’s is yellow, so I tried to use all my oranges first and yellow and brown next from my 2.5” scraps.  That box is getting thin.  I’m please with the emptiness; I may cut up what remains into squares and rectangles and make a chaotic scrap quilt.
I will pick out a few farm blocks to make over the next week; one child starts school Wednesday and three on Thursday, so it’s going to get quieter in the house.  Here we come, turquoise!

Stash Report Week #32 and 15 Minutes

No stash changes, but changes are a comin’.  I cut two easy quilts this week as well as masks (with more masks to follow), so I should have some tidy changes to my stash soon.  I’ve also successfully resisted ordering any grab bags of fabric (which I do love for their unexpected colors and price).

I did hand stitch every day, so my totals are 208 of 219 days.  I finished another brown round.

Rerouting…

Alas and alack, BJ had another flare this week, so I did only one thing I intended to in my sewing room: cut my remaining Modern Vintage blocks - 7!  BJ has been miserable and feverish since Monday evening (his birthday!), so I couldn’t wrap my brain around detailed cutting or sewing or even planning (I’m looking at you, farm blocks!).
Instead I cut and prepped masks for my sister’s family.
And cut two very simple quilts.  One is from Successful Scrap Quilts, so all of the pieces are simple bricks.  The other is strips in two sizes.  The 2.5” strips are all from my stash, and the 1.5” are from two small, odd pieces of green from my stash.
The mindless sewing has been better for this week, as it’s very easy to leave at a moment’s notice, and very easy to sew for a short time.  I’ll get back to the regularly programmed scrap colors eventually, but I may need a mindless week next week too until my brain recovers from the lack of sleep.

P.S. I should be excited about the Rainbow Scrap Challenge sewing: it’s my favorite color, teal/turquoise/blue-green!  (I can’t find my button to add a link this weekend.  I must be really tired or blogger changed again.)

August Goals

 My July goals were short…

1. Scraps: trim, make blocks in neutrals: another round on the hexagons, Modern Vintage, and some animal farm blocks.  I finished four rounds on hexagons, made my Modern Vintage blocks, and made a slew of animals in neutrals!

2.  Start a quilt for my nephew.  Started and done!

By starting new quilts over BJ’s illness, I have a few more goals for August…

1. Scraps: trim, make blocks in teal: another round on turquoise hexagons, cut the last Modern Vintage, and some farm blocks.

2. Make two small quilts from scraps.

3.  More masks.  More and more.  Sigh.

Stash Report Week #31 and 15 Minutes

I made a few small masks this week.  It’s amazing how much less fabric I need for a toddler mask compared to an adult one!  Only 12 masks made so far this year, but with the kids starting school this fall after a year of homeschool, I’m going to need to expand their selection.

IN this week: 0 yards
OUT this week: 1/4 yard

IN YTD: 57 1/4 yards (16 yards purchased)
OUT YTD: 79 1/4 yards
YTD Total: 22 yards OUT

BJ (whose birthday is tomorrow!) has been on a rather discombobulated sleep scheduled, so one night, after struggling to get him to sleep, I absolutely forgot to get to any hand stitching.  Ah, well.  I’ve still stitched 201 of 212 days for 2021.

August Block Count

I thought I wrote this, but it seems to be lost somewhere or I never wrote it at all… August was a quiet block month, with only 42 16-patch...
